I knew nothing of home buying. I was a kid out of college trying to figure out how to pay off school loans. I saw a girl I knew get a house at age 24 and I got curious and asked her about it. She told me her mom was a realtor and to speak to her so I did. She explained to me the credit [approval process] and steps to get a home. So I worked on the items and we started to look. As we got into the process, she mentioned a Kansas City Dream Program to me. The city would give me a 20% down payment if I lived within city limits and it’d be forgiven after ten years. So I did the math and realized I could be debt free by the end of the term if I sold the home for the amount I wanted after the loan being forgiven. I used the home to put up friends and make memories for years. I had renters so I wouldn’t have to pay a mortgage. Now ten years later, I’m leaving and made 75K and it’s enough to not only pay off school loans but be entirely debt free. Home ownership at a young age gave me a clean slate in my thirties.
